The Hunter cleans his face and hands, raw and red from those burning mustard greens. How those pesky witches learned about his weakness, the Hunter doesn’t know. He spits from pain. He hates being weak and vulnerable, but nothing can be done until his powers regenerate.

The Hern Museum is silent in the way dead things are. Even the walls that echoed screams of burning witches have gone quiet. The entire manor holds its breath, waiting for the Old Man to speak.

He sits rigid in a sagging armchair, the centers of his bushy eyebrows turned down in anger. Flames stir weakly behind a cracked marble hearth, but even as the Descendants shiver around the room, no one dares to rekindle it.

Finally, the Old Man says, “What did he let those witches do to you?”

The Hunter continues cleaning his skin with a brush, brush, brush, eyes heavy on his work.

The mushroom child moves from the shadows. “You should have picked someone else. Any one of us would have been more worthy.” He looks straight at the Hunter, eyes full of malice. “This Host will fail you. Take me instead, Your Darkness.”

If the Hunter wasn’t in so much pain, he would strike the boy like a viper. The insolence.

Something stirs in the Dark Place. His Host’s emotions, trickling down the Hunter’s spine like a velvety web of spiders. If the Hunter could, he would grin.

Yes, this Host may be physically weak, slimy, and gullible, but he has an unhealthy thirst to prove himself as a Hern. To fit in despite the soft feelings he keeps locked deep. More than anything, he wants approval.

And that makes him the most useful.

“You’re wrong,” the Hunter says. “I can feel this Hern’s power, his desire to please us. There is hate in this heart.” He turns to his family. The chill in his voice sends patterns of ice crawling up the windows.

“Witches burn, but family is forever.”
